Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today): Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is likely to launch the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) by January 2022. The NCMC will provide facility of shopping, grabing a bite, parking a vehicle and boarding metro at the tap of single card. The idea of the mobility card was conceived by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and launched in 2019. The card was demonstrated in Chennai two months ago with the automated fare collection feature.

A metro rail official said,
"The concept was demonstrated in metro stations two months back where a card was tapped at the authentic fare collection gates installed on the concourse level of the station. we hope to launch the system by New Year."

According to the officials,
It will be NCMC- compliant RuPay debit card which will work similar to the existing metro rail smartcards where users can top up and tap it on the Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates in metro stations. But unlike the smartcards which can be used only for metro rides and for parking vehicles in metro stations, the NCMC can also be used in other modes of transport like Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC ) and suburban trains when those transit systems launch the service. While in metro rail smartcards, the ticket amount is stored in the card in a pre-paid format and deducted at the gates.

NCMC will also involve a bank transaction between the card issuing bank and the acquirer bank that will partner with CMRL to enable the fare collection.
